Theses and Dissertations at UGA
The University of Georgia has theses and dissertations in both electronic and paper versions. To examine a UGA thesis or dissertation, researchers should first consult the GIL online catalog to determine its location, availability, and format.
All printed, paper theses and dissertations are stored offsite at the University Libraries' Repository. In 1999, theses and dissertations began appearing in electronic file format, and in 2001 the electronic format entirely replaced paper. As soon as they are cataloged and processed, electronic theses and dissertations are viewable via the Electronic Theses and Dissertations Database.
If a print copy of a University of Georgia thesis or dissertation (before 2001) is desired, but it cannot be borrowed for some reason (checked out, lost, etc.), the University's archival master copies may be available for viewing -- by prearranged appointment and not for check-out -- in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library. For further information, consult their procedures for viewing theses and dissertations.
About ETDs (electronic theses & dissertations)
Beginning in 1999, the University of Georgia Graduate School began accepting electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). Since the fall semester of 2001, all theses and dissertations are required to be electronic. ETDs reside in their own database (ETD) which is accessible via GALILEO@UGA and the Libraries' online catalog, GIL. At this time the only ETDs in the database are from the Graduate School. The Libraries' is working with the Honors College to make Honors theses available via GALILEO.
ETDs are received from the Graduate School by the Libraries' Systems Department who loads them into GALILEO. Once they are loaded into the GALILEO ETD database, the Libraries' Cataloging Department begins to catalog them in GIL. Cataloging the ETDs in GIL sets our holdings in WorldCat and provides information needed for Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
COVERAGE: Summer 1999-Summer 2009
NOTE: THIS DATE IS UPDATED AFTER EACH LOAD OF ETDS AND REFLECTS THE MOST RECENT THESES & DISSERTATIONS AVAILABLE IN THE ETD DATABASE.
If you have recently graduated and need more information about the status of your theses or dissertation, please contact the GRADUATE SCHOOL, at gradinfo@uga.edu.
Finding ETDs
There are two ways to find these electronic documents:
Through the Libraries' searchable Electronic Theses and Dissertations Database available through GALILEO@UGA,
Through GIL, the libraries' online public access catalog. An ETD record in GIL will provide a link to its corresponding entry in the online database.
Note: Some theses and disserations are not viewable off campus.
I am not at UGA, how do I see an electronic thesis or dissertation that is only viewable from the University of Georgia campus?
You may request the thesis or dissertation through the Interlibrary Loan Department of your home library.
