Disability Services FAQ
Our general policies and services are described below. We are flexible and try as best we can to provide the type of assistance that suits the specific need.
How do I get to the library and where can I park?
Directions to the Main, Science, and Music libraries or the Student Learning Center are online: http://www.libs.uga.edu/directions.html.
- The closest parking to the Main library is the North Campus Parking Deck.
- The closest parking to the Science library is the South Campus Parking Deck.
- The closest parking to the Student Learning Center is the Tate Center lot or the Hull Street Parking Deck.
Do the libraries have adaptable software like Kurzweil, JAWS, etc?
- The Main library has Zoomtext, Kurzweil Reading Edge, JAWS and a Chroma CCTV.
- The Science Library has Zoomtext, Kurzweil 1000 and 3000, JAWS and a Chroma CCTV.
- The Student Learning Center has Zoomtext and Kurzweil 3000, a Chroma CCTV, an Epson-GT-1999+ scanner, optical trackballs and 3D joysticks.
Librarians do not have extensive knowledge of these software packages, but will be happy to assist as they can.
Headphones are required for using screen reading software. Headphones can be checked out, but we strongly recommend bringing your own if possible.
Can I bring my own laptop?
The Main and Science libraries and the SLC all support wireless connections.
The SLC has many dataports (cables are not provided).

Is the library wheelchair accessible?
- All floors of the Main and Science libraries and the Student Learning Center are wheelchair accessible.
- Library bookshelf areas are not accessible. (See question below explaining how to retrieve books from the shelves.)
- The Main library has wheelchair accessible restrooms in the basement and on the 1st floor and 4th floors. The 4th floor restrooms have automatic doors.
- The Science Library has wheelchair accessible restrooms on the 2nd floor.
- All restrooms in the Student Learning Center are accessible.
Can I get assistance retrieving books from the shelves?
Access Services can retrieve books from the shelves and arrange to have photocopies made at no additional charge.

How do I return books?
- There are book return bins in the Main library parking lot and within the building. There is a Science Library book return bin in the lobby of the Boyd Graduate Studies building as well as within the Library itself.
- Library books can also be returned to the Curriculum Materials Library in Aderhold.
- Library books cannot be returned to the Student Learning Center.
How do I renew books?
- Books can be renewed online in GIL, the library catalog http://gil.uga.edu
- Books can be renewed over the phone by calling (706) 542-3256.
- A book can be renewed online two times before you need to bring it back to the library for renewal.
How do I make photocopies and what is the cost?
- There are self-service photocopiers on every floor of Main and Science libraries and the SLC.
- Self-service copies are 8¢/page and require a Bulldog Bucks card. If you do not have a Bulldog Bucks card, you can purchase a visitor card at the Main or Science Libraries (not at the Student Learning Center). A visitor card costs $1, 60¢ of which is the cost of the card and 40¢ to be used for copying/printing. You can add more money to your visitor card through the value added machines in each of the three buildings. Additional money added will not have the 60¢ charge for the card.
How do I access the special collections?
- Special Collections in the Main library include the media department, the Russell Library and the Hargrett Library.
- All Special Collections areas have different hours from the library as a whole. http://www.libs.uga.edu/special_collections/hours.html
- All library patrons are encouraged to call or email ahead to be sure that materials are available.
How do I use microfilm?
There are microfilm and microfiche readers in the basement and on the 2nd floor of the Main Library and on the 2nd floor of the Science library.
Microform printers do not accept cash; a UGA ID card or print card, with Bulldog Bucks, is required. Staff is happy to assist all patrons in the use of these machines.
Can I reserve a study carrel in the library?
- To reserve a study carrel in the Main or Science libraries you must first be registered with the UGA Disability Services office. Contact your disability specialist to make reservations.
- Some study carrels in the Science library are available on a walk-in basis.
- The Student Learning Center does not have individual study carrels.
Can I reserve a group study space?
- The Main and Science libraries do not have group study rooms, but the first and sixth floors of the Main Library, and the second floor (entry level floor) of the Science library are not quiet floors, and quiet group discussion is permitted.
- The Student Learning Center has 96 wheelchair accessible group study rooms with dataports and wireless access. They are available on a first come, first served basis and are not reservable.
What if I need reserve material for longer than the assigned loan period?
Arrangements for a longer reserves loan period can be made through the Reserves Desk: mainresv@uga.edu or call (706) 542-3256.
Who can give me library research advice?
- Reference librarians at Main and Science libraries and at the Student Learning Center give brief research help at the reference desk.
- More in-depth research help is available in an individual research conference. To request a conference, fill out the online form http://www.libs.uga.edu/ref/instruction/conform.html or call the Main Library at (706) 542-3251, the Science Library at (706) 542-0698 or the Student Learning Center at (706) 542-4673.
- While librarians teach patrons how to use research resources, they cannot provide extensive assistance typing searches and analyzing results.
