White Glove Dinner with the UGA Libraries

In the Spring of 2007, the Libraries announced the White Glove Dinners in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library.  We have had two white glove dinners so far and they have both been great experiences.  We still have some spaces available in our White Glove Dinners before every home game this Fall!  Call Chantel Dunham at 706-542-0628 to schedule your date with history!

Group members Vince Dooley, Frank Spence, and Jennifer and Greg Holcomb discuss their findings after examining some of the materials on display.
Libraries board members (L to R) Kate and Trav Paine and Dr. Roger Rowell examine letters and diaries from the Hargrett collection.
Coach Vince Dooley:
"When I first heard about the White Glove dinners the Library has planned, I thought it was a wonderful idea. Having been a Libraries Board member for over ten years, I am very familiar with many of the treasures in the collections and I thought this was an excellent way to introduce the general public to the fantastic treasures that most people don't even know that UGA owns. And with a portion of the proceeds going to preservation of the collections, these dinner are a win-win for everyone. And imagine my surprise when Mary Ellen [director of the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library] brought out some documents I'd never seen before. There is always something new to be discovered in the Library."
Libraries board member Judy Rowell examines a Civil War era photo album.
Mary Ellen Brooks, director of the Hargrett Rare Books and Manuscript Library, displays a rare book for Dr. Emory Thomas, Peggy Galis, and Glenda LaBoon.
Dr. Emory Thomas, Regents Professor of History, Emeritus:
"The Libraries White Glove dinners are a way for you to join those whose primary task it is to read other peopel's mail. And if intimate communication from the 1800s is not enough, then feast your eyes upon rare maps, photographs and prints. Peruse diaries and drawings. Come see and hear the "raw materials" of our history and culture. The University owns a wonderful chunk of Georgia's past and you have the opportunity to don your white gloves and get up close and personal with some of these fascinating materials."
Libraries board member Vince Dooley and Frank Spence study some of the rare maps in the Hargrett collection.
Mary Ellen Brooks points out interesting details to group members Vince and Barbara Dooley, Frank Spence, Tad Brown, and Jennifer Holcomb.
