Approval Plans

Like many large research libraries, the University of Georgia Libraries use approval plans to assist in building collections.  An approval plan is an arrangement by which a wholesaler assumes the responsibility for selecting and supplying all publications fitting a library's collection profile.  Materials sent to the UGA Libraries through the approval plan are reviewed by subject bibliographers before they are accepted for the collection.  Changes to the approval plan are made periodically to reflect shifts in the needs of academic departments or in the publishing patterns of a subject area.

The University of Georgia Libraries have a major approval plan for U.S., Canadian, and British university presses.  In addition, the Libraries have other approval plans for materials from Spain, Portugal, and selected Latin American countries, French literature and history, art exhibition catalogs, and music scores and sound recordings.

Approval plans allow the Libraries to acquire the most significant titles in a variety of subject fields quickly and at a discount.  They are not appropriate for some subject areas, publishers, or types of publications.  Materials that fall outside approval plans are selected by bibliographers using other collection methods.

The Libraries also welcome your suggestions for the acquisition of additional materials that support teaching, study, and research at the University.
