A thoroughly updated version of the first edition of Stammler's Verfasserlexikon. German authors of the medieval period are included as well as a selection of authors who wrote in Latin. Also represented are those authors who wrote in Middle Low German who had some impact on the rest of German literature. Entries include the following: biographical information, detailed list of works, including tradition of the work, contents, editions, literature and bibliographies.

Includes authors, philosophers, theologians, etc. who in some way influenced or contributed to German literature. Covers the Middle Ages through the 20th century.

Alphabetically arranged lexicon of playwrights, actors, and actresses, producers, as well as theaters and motifs, prominent in the history of the German theater. Complete through volume 3, entry Singer.

Goedeke, Karl. Grundrisz zur Geschichte der deutschen Dichtung aus den Quellen. 1884-1919 (vols. 1-15, pt.1) Two other editions, shelved in the same call number area, continue the work.

A monumental work containing biographical and bibliographical information on innumerable authors in German literature beginning with the Middle Ages. Included are exhaustive lists of each author's known writings. The 2nd edition spans the period from the Middle Ages to 1830. A 3rd edition has replaced the second for the Goethezeit. The fourth volume of the 3rd edition contains the Goethe-Bibliographie, including a supplement of literature on Goethe to 1960. An index, published in 1975, provides access to all the editions of the work. The call number is PT1889.G55 Z590 (Main Ref, shelved with the Goedeke).

Kunisch, Hermann. Handbuch der deutschen Gegenwartsliteratur. 1969. 3 volumes.

Covers 20th century German authors. Citations include introductions. bio- graphies and discussions of authors' important works as well as listings of other works. Volume 2 contains an index of authors included and persons cited. Volume 3 is a guide to personal bibliographies, published separately or in journals, for authors cited.

Provides biographical, critical and lengthy bibliographical information for well-known and not so well-known German authors writing since 1950. Quarterly updates insure timeliness. Arranged alphabetically by author. Looseleaf in 9 volumes.

Wilpert, Gero von. Lexikon der Weltliteratur. 1963-1968. 2 volumes.

Volume 1 contains short biographical and bibliographical entries on selected world authors; volume 2 consists of short synopses of works famous in world literature.

PT401.N48 (Main Ref)
Neues Handbuch der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur seit 1945. Begründet von Hermann Kunisch. 1990.

Bio/bibliographical articles on German authors of the postwar period. A short bibliography of each author's works not mentioned in the main article completes each citation. A partial revision of "Handbuch der deutschen Gegenwartsliteratur" (see above), but does not include articles on movements and genres or its Bibliographie der Personalbibliographien.

The following multi-volume work is covers literatures of many nations:

Dictionary of literary biography. 1987.

A number of volumes in this series deal with German and Austrian writers of various literary periods. Each volume lists authors' published works and gives refereces to secondary literature. Biographical information and content notes on major works are also provided.
