Arranged chronologically and according to genre and
written in narrative form, each of the nine chapters explores a
particular era of German literature, beginning with 1500.
Introductory material in each chapter examines the cultural and
religious milieu of the age. A Biographical Index contains
paragraph-length biographical and bibliographic notes on authors,
most mentioned in the text. A General Index of subjects and
authors completes the volume.
