Sagarra, Eda and Peter Skrine. A Companion to German literature: from 1500 to the present. 1997.

Arranged chronologically and according to genre and written in narrative form, each of the nine chapters explores a particular era of German literature, beginning with 1500. Introductory material in each chapter examines the cultural and religious milieu of the age. A Biographical Index contains paragraph-length biographical and bibliographic notes on authors, most mentioned in the text. A General Index of subjects and authors completes the volume.

A single volume work with entries on authors, noted works and places important in German literature since 800 A.D. Author citations consist of short biographies and brief lists of their most important works. An attempt is made to relate each literary figure to the history of the particular period.
