- How to read a citation and the different citation styles
- Difference between GALILEO and Google/Yahoo, etc.
- Evaluating websites for academic quality
- Distinguishing between popular and scholarly journals
- Where to ask for help in the library
- Boolean searching
- Difference between primary and secondary sources
Ways we deliver information literacy instruction:
- One-on-one conferences with students
- Single teaching session for a specific class project
- Several teaching sessions for a specfic class project
- Three credit undergraduate class, team taught with the Department of Academic Enhancement
- Drop-in orientation sessions offered at beginning of semester
Ways we collaborate with outside institutions on information literacy: - Provide tours for visiting students from high schools and middle schools
- Teach database searching for courses at other area colleges
Experiences and issues working with our faculty and administration on information literacy:
We are continually doing outreach to get faculty to bring their classes to us for library instruction, preferably when students have a specific project to complete. Response varies widely; some instructors routinely ask for library instruction but the majority don't. We are making headway though - the number of students we teach grows every year. We also create alot of online research tools for students doing research from remote locations. Generally speaking, faculty and administration at UGA do not think of the library as having a teaching mission.
Our information literacy teaching goals:
- Teach more course-related library instruction sessions
- Work collaboratively with librarians outside UGA
- Encourage faculty perception of librarians as information literacy teachers.
