Info Literacy at Piedmont College - Athens Center

Number of library staff who teach info literacy skills:

One

Typical information literacy skills we teach:

At the beginning of each semester I do presentations for students which help them use the resources available on the Arrendale Library Site which is the site for Piedmont College. I show them how to check library accounts and renew online, how to use the Journal Locator, how to use Electronic Sources to search for journal articles, how to use Mayflower to locate books at the Athens Center and the Demorest campus. I also give instruction in using Galileo, WilsonWeb, Academic Search Premier and ProQuest Research Library. In addition I cover using Document Delivery to check out books not available at the Athens Center as well as journal articles. I also give instruction in using ebooks.

Ways we deliver information literacy instruction:

I go to the classrooms and use boxlights to project the computer screen and go into the Arrendale Website and cover each section. I provide booklets with all the information we cover so students will have a reference when they need to use the site. I send out forms to instructors prior to my presentation asking if there are special things they want covered or particular searches they would like for me to do. There are generally 20-25 students in a session. For smaller groups I sometimes use the student computer lab so they can have hands-on practice. I also offer one-on-one help whenever it is needed.

Ways we collaborate with outside institutions on information literacy:

None.

Experiences and issues working with our faculty and administration on information literacy:

My experiences have been very positive. The faculty is appreciative of any help that I can give to them or the students. Both administration and faclty are very supportive and encouraging.

Our information literacy teaching goals:

At this time I feel the presentations are very well-received and I have gotten very positive feedback from students and faculty. I am including some information about resources at UGA in my presentations this semester and encouraging students to use UGA services. My most recent goal is obtaining curriculum materials for our Athens Center Resource Room.
