Info Literacy at Athens Technical College

Number of library staff who teach info literacy skills:

Four

Typical information literacy skills we teach:
  • The library is there to help you
  • Where is the library catalog and how to search it
  • What is GALILEO and how to use it
  • How to find Career Resources (GCIS, websites, online classifieds)
  • Boolean searching (Athens campus)
  • How to search any online database
  • Evaluate web pages
  • Web page use vs GALILEO
  • Target specific areas of information needs for individual programs such as Veterinary Technicians, Marketing, Physical Therapy Assistants, etc.
Ways we deliver information literacy instruction:

Instructors may schedule classroom sessions, or bring their classes to the library for orientations and library instruction. One-on-one instruction is always welcome and although drop-in sessions would be discouraged for classes, we would try to accomodate them.... Have done some related bulletin boards. There is a link to request library instruction on the Library Services web page.

Ways we collaborate with outside institutions on information literacy:

The technical college librarians of DTAE (Department of Technical and Adult Education) have a committee which is currently developing a basic Information Literacy webpage which would be of use to students on campus or online students taking classes through GVTC (Georgia Virtual Technical College). We have not collaborated with local institutions yet.

Experiences and issues working with our faculty and administration on information literacy:

A positive experience is having the opportunity to speak at New Student Orientation sessions adn New Adjunct Faculty Orientations. There is still the chalenge of getting the faculty to request library instruction sessions. There is no class, credit or non, which requires students to receive information literacy education from the librarians.

Our information literacy teaching goals:

More participation with faculty. More contact with students. Have all students know how to use the library catalog, GALILEO and be able to evaluate the information they find on the web. Having students feel comfortable coming to the library to seek information.

Other:

Library surveys of graduates have demonstrated that those students who have experienced library instruction had an increased satisfaction rating of the library.
