Info Literacy at the Athens-Clarke County Library

Number of library staff who teach info literacy skills:

All desk staff.

Typical information literacy skills we teach:

Our Educational Technology Center offers occasional classes on using a computer (the nuts and bolts: this is a mouse, etc.) and simple searching. Our reference department assists patrons on a one-on-one, as-needed basis in library and online research.

Ways we deliver information literacy instruction:

One-on-one, as time permits.

Ways we collaborate with outside institutions on information literacy:

Lots of collaboration on literacy, but not on information literacy.

Experiences and issues working with our faculty and administration on information literacy:

At present, administrative issues revolve around access to computers for all ages, filtering, CIPA and the like.

Our information literacy teaching goals:

Regular classes for teens and adults on conducting research through the Education Technology Center. Perhaps training teens to help other teens conduct research in the Young Adult area. We would like to learn how to motivate our patrons to do better research.

Other:

Many people using the public library are illiterate and do not understand that to use the computer they must 1) know how to use it mechanically and 2) be able to read. Or we have people who can read but do not want to thake the time to do research in depth. We find that students, especially middle school students, just want to do a Yahoo search, quick and dirty, especially if the assignment is due tomorrow.
