Veteran Concert Promoters to speak at UGA Libraries

January 14, 2013 – 2:28 PM - Jean Cleveland

The University of Georgia Libraries and the Terry College of Business will host a question and answer program with Alex Cooley and Peter Conlon, veteran concert promoters and founders of Atlanta’s Music Midtown, on Jan. 15 at 2 p.m.in the auditorium of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries.

Conlon and Cooley will be interviewed by Lisa Love and Tom Beard.  Love was formerly with the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and now serves as director of music marketing and development for the State of Georgia.  She is also the founding editor of Georgia Music Magazine and is a member of the Country Music Association and the National Association of Recording Industry Professionals.   Beard served as deputy assistant to the president under Jimmy Carter and is a longtime personal friend of Conlon and Cooley.

This event, co-hosted by the Georgia Music Foundation and the UGA Music Business Program of the Terry College, is open free to the public.  The conversation will be recorded and archived at the University of Georgia’s Special Collections Libraries.

Cooley and Conlon joined forces in 1982 to create Concert/Southern Promotions, one of the country’s top 10 concert promotion firms, producing more than 300 shows per year, including some of the biggest names in the business.  They later sold their business to SFX Entertainment, which was subsequently purchased by Clear Channel Media.

In 1994, they created the internationally recognized Music Midtown Festival, which featured both national and up-and-coming artists. The series ended in 2005 but was revived by Conlon in 2011 to enthusiastic response.  Both Conlon and Cooley have been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

World Book Night – Promote Reading, Give Free Books

January 11, 2013 – 5:20 PM - amber

The Miller Learning Center is proud to participate in World Book Night as a library distribution site. World Book Night U.S. is part of an ambitious global campaign to encourage reading. In the U.S., a half million free books will be handed out in towns and cities all on one day — April 23, 2013 — by enlisting 25,000 volunteer book lovers to promote reading by going into their communities and handing out books to light or non-readers and those without access to printed books. There are 30 U.S. World Book Night titles. Carl Lennertz, World Book Night U.S. Executive Director, said the books chosen, “are contemporary or classic books that appeal to a wide range of new readers. We looked for diversity and variety in all things: subject matter, age level, gender, as well as ethnic and geographic considerations.”

Want to help? Apply to be a volunteer book giver at www.us.worldbooknight.org now through January 25, 2013, by providing answers to several questions and picking a book title to give out from the World Book Night U.S. 2013 list. We’ll host a reception the week before World Book Night and distribute books to book-giving volunteers.

Remembering Curtis Beall

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Curtis Beall, UGA alum, cheerleader, and WWII veteran. The University Archives unit of the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library maintains the Curtis A. Beall Papers, which holds his 2006 book, Memoirs of a Marine Dawg: From Rose Bowl to Pacific Theater as well as photographs and clothing from his time at the University of Georgia. For any UGA football fan, Beall’s presence was a highlight at homecoming games where he would wear his 1942 cheerleader’s sweater and help lead the crowd in cheering on the home team.

UGA Special Collections Libraries Launch Community Docent Program

January 4, 2013 – 4:47 PM - Richard B. Russell Library

The University of Georgia’s Richard B. Russell Building for Special Collections Libraries is now accepting applications for participants in its docent program.

The Docent Corps is a skilled group of volunteers who provide tours of the library galleries to visitors, ranging from fifth graders to adults. Docents are trained to highlight permanent and rotating exhibitions and to help increase awareness of the many resources offered by the three special collections libraries: The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collections, and The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies.

“Participation in the docent program requires a substantial commitment of time and energy on the part of volunteers, but we think it is tremendously rewarding,” said Jan Levinson, Outreach Archivist with the Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, who coordinates the program.

A 10-week training program provides an opportunity for docents to meet curators, archivists, and other special collections staff, learn about the collections and techniques for leading tours, and become familiar with all parts of the Special Collections Building. Follow-up meetings throughout the year provide opportunities to learn about new exhibits in the galleries and programs sponsored by the three special collections libraries.

“We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, flexible, and open to working with visitors of all ages,” Levinson said. “We don’t require prior experience in the arts and humanities, but a love of history and experience with teaching or public speaking is desirable.”

For more information about the training schedule and expectations, please visit the FAQ page. Interested individuals can apply online by visiting: http://www.libs.uga.edu/scl/contribute/docentapp.html

Applications must be submitted by Friday, February 8, 2013. Please direct any questions to Jan Levinson at jlevinso@uga.edu or (706) 542-5788. Note: All candidates selected for admission to the docent program will be required to submit to a background investigation.
