The only surviving signed manuscript of the permanent Constitution of the Confederate States of America will be displayed April 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Richard B. Russell Jr. Building Special Collections Libraries.
Displayed only one day each year due to its fragility, the Constitution and an accompanying exhibit of related Civil War materials commemorate Confederate Memorial Day. Observances this year focus on 1864, the final year of the war’s Sesquicentennial. Part of the exhibit is devoted to the photographs — then a new phenomenon — of George Barnard, Gen. W.T. Sherman’s mapmaker.
