Russell Special Collections Library Auditorium (300 S. Hull Street).
Our 1960s feature is “Gideon’s Trumpet”. Henry Fonda stars as Clarence Gideon, a Florida convict whose letter-writing campaign led to the landmark 1963 Supreme Court ruling guaranteeing the right of legal counsel to anyone accused of a crime. This Peabody Award-winning made for TV movie, broadcast in 1980, also stars Jose Ferrer as Abe Fortas. Professor Russell C. Gabriel, the Director of Georgia Law’s Criminal Defense Clinic, will lead a discussion following the screening.
