James W. Woodruff Exhibit
June 15, 2007 – 3:19 PM
The exhibit at the Hargrett Library this month honors James W. Woodruff (1879-1963), a tireless campaigner for modern uses of the Chattahoochee River. During his long career, “Mr. Jim,” as he was affectionately known, advocated developing and increasing navigation, commerce, hydro-electric power, and recreation on the river. His legacy to all Georgians is an impressive river development project that culminated in the Apilachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint project. The Project resulted in the construction of several major dams on the Chattahoochee River that provided hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and navigation. James W. Woodruff is also remembered for his compassion for those in need and his quiet contribution to young people who could not afford college. He was truly a remarkable Georgian.
