E-Books at the UGA Libraries and Elsewhere
January 18, 2011 – 1:48 PMDid you get an e-book reader for Christmas this year? Sales were high, and whether you want to read e-books on a Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad or even your plain old laptop, we can point you to some good resources for free e-books.
Through the UGA Libraries
- E-books available through NetLibrary appear in the GIL catalog and are only readable on the web; they cannot be downloaded in an e-book format.
- E-Books available through Springerlink also appear in the GIL catalog; they can be downloaded as .pdf files and read on some readers.
- A number of Galileo databases provide access to digital books; see the UGA Libraries’ guide to them here. Formats will vary, but some can be downloaded and sent to e-book readers.
Through the Athens Public Library
- The public library does not currently have e-books for download, but they have a guide with some good tips about the trustworthiness of e-book sites and notes on e-book formats.
Web Sites with Free E-Books
E-Book Management Software
Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management software. It can be used for:
- Library Management
- E-book conversion, including file formats and rescaling font sizes
- Syncing to e-book reader devices
- Downloading news (i.e. complete articles from the New York Times) from the web and converting articles into e-book format
- Comprehensive e-book viewer
- Content server for online access to your book collection
