From the December 2 Athens Banner-Herald:
Periodical costs rise, press library budgets (registration required to read article)
The UGA Main and Science libraries own more than 4 million books, 6.5 million microform units and 7,000 print journal subscriptions, and provide full-text online access to more than 35,000 journals and approximately 400,000 books.
But the cost of periodicals and serials – magazines and newspapers like Newsweek and the London Times, but especially popular academic journals like Nature and the New England Journal of Medicine – has been increasing by 7 percent per year, almost three times the most recent federal inflation rate of 2.4 percent, library officials said.
UGA librarians expect to fall $1.7 million short of the library’s 2008 budget, which they need to just to keep the periodicals they have.
