More About this Film: The Education of Ms. Groves (2006): Monica Groves is a first-year teacher at a tough urban middle school in Atlanta. Just 21-years old at the beginning of the semester, she is bright-eyed and full of optimism. Within weeks her optimism clashes with reality. Her students come from mostly low-income families, some are raised only by a single mom or grandparent, others are homeless or live in violence-ridden neighborhoods; these are children who lack even the most basic support systems. Predictably, Monica struggles to maintain control over her classroom. Monica is slowly learning that in order to find her voice as a teacher, she must change as a person. More information on the film series is available by contacting Jan Levinson at (706) 542-5788. Event #2: Community Forum, exploring the issue: “The New Science of Food: Facing Up to Our Biotechnology Choices”
When: Friday, February 19th from 3:00-4:30PM
Where: Russell Library Auditorium, West entrance of Main Library Building, North Campus, UGA
The Russell Forum for Civic Life in Georgia (RFCLG) is hosting National Issues Forums on a monthly basis at the Russell Library. This month’s deliberative forum considers the issues in play at the intersection of food production and technology. The use of new biotechnology tools in our global agricultural and food system has rapidly increased during the past decade. Scientists can now use biotechnology to create characteristics in plants or animals by transferring genetic material from one source to another plant or animal. In the process, new personal and societal decisions emerge about these food and agricultural production practices.
Using the National Issues Forums Institute’s guide, The New Science of Food: Facing up to Our Biotechnology Choices, the group will consider several approaches to tackling this complex issue. Trained neutral moderators will guide the discussion. The event is free and open to all. More information is available by contacting Jill Severn at 706-542-5766.
