May Series Of Exhibitions Kicks Off With “ARTifacts Rock Athens” At UGA Special Collections Libraries
Athens, GA (April 21, 2014) – Art Rocks Athens kicks off its May series of exhibitions with the opening of the exhibition “ARTifacts Rock Athens: Relics From The Athens Music Scene, 1975-1985” at UGA Special Collections Libraries, 300 Hull Street in Athens on Thursday, May 1. The event starts at 6pm in the Special Collections auditorium with a film, talk and fashion show. Beginning with a screening of Spencer Thornton’s footage of the very first time the B-52’s were captured on film, the short film will be followed by a talk about how art made music in Athens in the late 70’s and early 80’s by Michael Lachowski of the Georgia Museum of Art.
Immediately following Michael’s talk will be a fashion show featuring Cindy Wilson’s original stage clothes. The auditorium runway show will feature local Athens models outfitted by Style Director Liz Larson. Atlanta Celebutante Derek Sims will emcee the show with narrated background about the clothes.
After the fashion show, guests are invited to cocktails and a viewing of the extensive exhibition of rock and roll artifacts assembled by Chris Rasmussen, owner of Secret Sounds in Athens, and Special Collections co-curators Mary Miller and Ruta Abolins.
The hallway display cases of Special Collections will hold a treasure trove of Athens rock memorabilia including the B-52’s late Ricky Wilson’s guitar; celebrated Athens poet and writer John Seawright’s typewriter; founding R.E.M. member Bill Berry’s drumkit; and the band Pylon’s original pylon.
The party continues from 7pm-10pm in the large event room of Special Collections where food from the Last Resort and other local restaurants will be served with drinks at a DJ disco dance party. Models from Athens Fashion Collective with band members from New Madrid, Kids, Reptar, hopeforagoldensummer and others will don vintage club and party t-shirts throughout the reception party. This is the first of many free events the Art Rocks Athens Foundation is bringing to Athens this May.
The Art Rocks Athens Festival continues Memorial Day weekend with exhibition openings at Lamar Dodd School of Art, The Georgia Museum of Art and The Lyndon House, with a dance performance at UGA New Dance Theater. Live music shows at the 40 Watt Club Friday and Georgia Theatre Saturday booked by Jason NeSmith will include performances by musicians in town for the Festival weekend.
