On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon, fulfilling President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of sending an American there safely by the end of that decade. In honor of the 40th anniversary of what is perhaps mankind’s greatest technological achievement to date, the UGA Map Library presents maps and photographs of the Moon on the first floor of the Miller Learning Center (at grand staircase).
The display includes maps of the Moon created before and after the historic 1969 landing, copies of original Lunar Orbiter photographs from 1966/67 that were used to map and analyze the Moon’s surface in preparation for the landing itself, and a Moon globe showing the landing sites of the various Apollo missions.
The Bulldog Book Club, created by Fran Teague of the UGA English department, hosts informal meetings each semester to discuss a wide range of readings. All are welcome!
Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game
“This futuristic tale involves aliens, political discourse on the Internet, sophisticated computer games, and an orbiting battle station. Yet the reason it rings true for so many is that it is first and foremost a tale of humanity; a tale of a boy struggling to grow up into someone he can respect while living in an environment stripped of choices.”

Historic air photos & Sanborn Fire Insurance maps of UGA from 1885 – 1980 on display in the MLC
A hundred years after it was founded in 1785, UGA consisted of a few buildings on what is now North Campus. Historic air photos and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps from the UGA Map Library displayed on the 1st floor of the Miller Learning Center show how Georgia’s flagship institution of higher education grew and developed over its second hundred years.
Curated by Hallie Pritchett, Map and Federal Regional Depository Librarian, University of Georgia Libraries.
