Join the UGA Libraries / MLC Student Advisory Group!

Are you interested in helping us shape the future of the Libraries and MLC? We are looking for 3-5 members to join the Student Advisory Group for the coming year.

The group will meet twice annually to capture feedback from students about Libraries/MLC services, resources, facilities, and programming in order to foster communication that will improve and develop the Libraries/MLC and our role in supporting student learning. Students will serve one year terms with the option to renew.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Library Hours

The Main and Science Libraries will operate with reduced hours in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as follows:

Sunday, January 18 – 1PM to 9PM
Monday, January 19 – CLOSED

Regular semester hours will resume on Tuesday, January 20 – 7:30AM to 2AM.

Parts of the Main Library are temporarily without power.

What’s NOT working:

  • WEPA print kiosks on 1st and 4th floor
  • Library printers in front part of 1st floor
  • Reference desk phones

What IS working:

  • Library printers in back room of first floor
  • Access Services (Circulation) phones
  • Checking out materials at circulation desk
  • Elevators in back part of building

Announcement via ArchNews:

The Facilities Maintenance Division reports a power outage on circuits 1 and 5 affecting buildings generally in the area from Memorial and Reed Halls northward through Journalism-Psychology, Baldwin, the Main Library, and the east side of North Campus.  The source of the problem has been traced to a switch outside Park Hall.  There is no estimated time for restoration of power, but crews are working on a way to re-route the circuits and restore power at the earliest possible time.


Special Collections Libraries Closed Monday for MLK Day

Folger Librarian to speak at Book Symposium

booksymposiumMichael Witmore, director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, is the key speaker for “Libraries and Labyrinths: A Symposium,” Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. in the Russell Special Collections Libraries auditorium. Whitmore will speak on “Reading Variety in Early Modern Print.”

A reception will follow. The event is open free to the public.

The symposium continues Friday at 9:30 a.m. with a faculty panel discussion and, at 11:15, a workshop on “Shakespeare in the Classroom.”

An exhibit featuring private press books from the Hargrett Rare Book private press collection will be on display.

Sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, the UGA Libraries and the UGA English Department.


Augustus Longstreet Hull: Annalist of Athens

The first Augustus Longstreet Hull Award in honor of significant contributions to the preservation on Athens history will be presented by the Athens Historical Society following a program on Hull, who recorded the early history of the university, in his “Historical Sketch of the University of Georgia,” and Athens, in his “Annals of Athens.”

University Archivist Emeritus Steven Brown will discuss the contributions of the early Hulls.

A reception will follow.

The event is open free to the public Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries.

Special Collections request system scheduled for maintenance

Beginning on Friday, December 26th, 2014 from 11:59 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. access to and retrieval of materials in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, and Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards collections will be unavailable while updates are made to the database server.

The UGA Libraries, including the Special Collections Libraries, will close the afternoon of Dec. 24 for winter break and re-open Jan. 2, 2015.

 


Application Deadline Extended for Community Docent Program

The University of Georgia’s Richard B. Russell Building for Special Collections Libraries is extending the application deadline for participation in its docent program to Friday, January 9, 2015.

The Docent Corps is a skilled group of volunteers who provide tours of the exhibit galleries to visitors, ranging from fifth graders to adults. Docents are trained to highlight permanent and rotating exhibitions and to help increase awareness of the many resources offered by the three special collections libraries: The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, The Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collections, and The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies.

A 10-week training program, hosted from Feb. 17 through Apr. 21, provides an opportunity for docents to meet curators, archivists, and other special collections staff, learn about the collections and techniques for leading tours, and become familiar with all parts of the Special Collections Libraries Building. Follow-up monthly meetings throughout the year provide opportunities to learn about new exhibits in the galleries and programs sponsored by the three special collections libraries.

The program seeks applicants who are enthusiastic, flexible, and open to working with visitors of all ages. No previous experience in the arts or humanities is required, but a love of history and experience with teaching or public speaking is desired.
