NOMINEE: Mariann Burright
Department: Collection Development
Testimonial: Mariann hit the ground running after being hired to as Head of Science Collections & Scholarly Communications. She was assigned to work with me on the library's new Institutional Repository (IR): to draft policy around the issues of open access and copyright, and also to promote/increase use of the IR by university faculty.
Mariann has been, from the start, professional and easy to work with. We meet regularly to map a way forward for the IR while also assessing past efforts. Since her arrival, Mariann has:
1. Joined the Faculty Activity Repository (FAR) committee where she has advocated for the IR as a critical piece in the university's attempt to identify and assess its total scholarly output.
2. Joined multiple committees on the GALILEO Knowledge Repository project which is working to build a state-wide network of IRs. She sits on the Steering, Symposium, and Outreach and Evaluation Committees.
3. Brought nationally recognized expert on copyright and scholarly publishing, Kevin Smith of Duke University, to speak at the newly opened Special Collections Libraries Building.
In a short time, Mariann has become indispensable to the work of developing UGA's IR and to educating faculty on the critical policy issues around open access and copyright.
