What?

In keeping with this year's theme, which celebrates all things monetarily challenged, departmental films should be DIY in spirit and substance. The films will be screened at the ASSET Awards ceremony and made available to watch online via the ASSET Awards website. A prize will be given for the film selected by the audience's votes at the ceremony. Hollywood came of age during the Depression, so if you need help sorting out how to approach the topic of empty pockets, you could do worse than refresh yourself on The Grapes of Wrath. Or, if migrant workers don't make you laugh hard enough, go the more escapist romantic fantasy route, like My Man Godfrey and it's doppelganger The Philadelphia Story. Then again, you could just do this: Think breadlines. Think dust and Model-T's and "Buddy, can you spare a dime?" Think WPA-style communist art murals at the post office. It'll come to you.

The Grapes of Wrath was 128 minutes. Your epic of courage beating the odds should be no longer than three minutes. Your group is strongly encouraged to practice in advance so that filming can proceed as smoothly as possible and so that you can be sure your video will be of the appropriate length. The ASSET Awards Committee reserves the right to edit any footage submitted for this video in regard to time and content - but don't let it come that, yeah? [Also, remember that the wackier your video format, the wackier our editor gets. If you must use WMV or some other Windows Thing, that's okay, that's fine, but we looove our Quicktime MOVs - not sure what we'd do if you hand us your Flip camera, but should that come to pass we'll talk.]

Who?

Departments or groups may participate. Departments or groups are encouraged to use their own equipment and film their own video, but assistance is also available (see Contact below). In the event that equipment or help is needed, the department or group should have one contact person; this person will be responsible for arranging the filming schedule and for any communication between that department and the ASSET Awards Committee.

When?

Filming assistance will be available June 8 to July 2, 2009. Please schedule your department's appointment as early as possible.

Final, edited films must be submitted by July 10, 2009 to Craig Breaden in the Russell Library (drop it off in person or campus mail is fine too).
