Employee of the Year

Faculty

This year’s faculty employee of the year is John Campbell.  Over his long tenure with the Libraries John has perfected his skills as a business librarian to become one of the Libraries’ most frequently consulted staff members by faculty members and students.  John’s willingness to share his vast knowledge of the field is well known, not just in the Terry College of Business, but in several departments on south campus as well.  Working in a field with an esoteric vocabulary, John provides extensive consultations for researchers embarking on complex projects.

Just as John brings persistent and careful analysis to every question he answers, he does likewise with every resource he purchases.  As prices continue to escalate while budgets remain lean, John uses a series of calculations to evaluate expenditures for databases and journals.  Marshalling all of the facts he can gather John routinely examines not just usage, but the per cent increase, journal impact factors, and pertinent publisher characteristics. As a result our business collection is selective and focused on our users’ needs.

As John looks toward his retirement at the end of this year the Libraries takes this opportunity to recognize his many years of outstanding service.

Staff

This year’s Classified Staff Employee of the Year is Rachel Parnell. It is clear that the library is highly dependent on the Binding unit to achieve its mission and Rachel has excelled at running the Unit.

She personally wiped out the binding backlog at the Main Library when she took over as Unit Head and is considered by many of her colleagues and supervisors as one of the hardest working library staff that they know.  Rachel is an amiable, diligent, committed employee, willingly accepts new responsibility and will chip in to help out other departments.

Rachel can always be depended on to be on top of everything; she never let things slide and isn’t hesitant to ask for advice.  Rachel aims for the highest standards in her performance and is very receptive to suggestions, keeps the appropriate people apprised of anything out-of-the ordinary but handles the mundane on her own.  Particularly noteworthy is her efficiency in designing the workflow of her unit; an example of which is her suggestion that it would save a lot of time to have a laptop to take to the stacks when pulling periodicals for binding.  2 of the reserve laptops being replaced with new ones were acquired and this has greatly increased efficiency. Rachel interacts very professionally with her staff as well as a number of staff in Library departments concerning items they have requested for binding/re-binding. Running the Binding unit doesn’t just involve packing up boxes and shipping them to the National Library Bindery. Rachel is essential to many departments, fostering a spirit of helpfulness in others by her example and also by allowing her staff to participate in helpful projects and tasks not directly related to their work.

On top of it all Rachel is an active and supportive staff member inlibrary activities outside of her work -- LSA, bowling, crafts, Campus Cats, etc.  As icing on the cake, she is an awesome cook, fattening up the Acquisitions and Serials Separtment with such delectables as chocolate cheesecake and home made baklava!  Rachel Parnell is a exemplary team player and supporter of the Libraries.
