Unsung Hero/ine Nominees
Awarded to the person who continually and effectively fulfills his/her obligations to the mission of the libraries and who is commonly not recognized as doing so or has his/her recognition skipped over for colleagues in more public or glamorous positions. This person is continuously both a real benefit to his/her colleagues and a stable and dependable resource for the UGA Libraries as a whole.

Margie Compton
Media Archives
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
Margie is the Media Archives Archivist. She makes sure that our fragile collection of media on 8mm, Super8, 9.5mm, and 16mm film, 2-inch, 1-inch, 3/4", 1/2" videotape, and our trascription disks, 1/2", cassette, DAT, and CD aduio formats survive for the longterm. This means diligently keeping track of items in need of preservation and monitoring storage conditions. Margie also handles the physical intake of collections. How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
Margie has been with the libraries for almost 5 years. How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Margie has applied for three small grants and gotten all of them. She was able to get money from UGA Contracts and Grants to get 4 large refrigerators we desperately needed to help preserve our film collections. By freezing films that are in a state of vinegar deterioration you can hold them in statis until preservation money is attained to make a new negative and print. One of the empty freezers we have was used as an emergency stop gap by the Hargrett Library after an AC pipe leaked over a box of books. By freezing the books the restoration work could then procedd slowly with the knowledge that books would not be further damaged by mold, mildew, etc.. Margie also helped bag the books before they were put in the freezer. In addition Margie has received two National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) grants for a total of $10,000 to preserve home movies and filmmed programs from the Peabody Awards Collection. The NFPF now refers people in this region to us for help in moving image preservation issues. How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
Margie is very concerned about the temperature and humidity of our storage environment here at the Main Library and at the off-site repository. She keeps track of this information diligently. Without the freezer available for Hargrett to use what would have happened to the books? And she brings in preservation dollars to the collection; this is vitally important for the longevity of our colleciton.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
The preservation of the collections is one of the primary goals for special collections in the Libraries. Margie's work is key in making that happen for the Media Archives. What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
Margie loves working hands on with moving image collections. It shows in everything does and how she represents the Libraries at conferences and with colleagues outside of UGA. She loves what she does and we all benefit from that.Matt Hannum

DLG/ Government Documents/ Library Associate IIHow has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Matt believes strongly in the important role that public documents serve in our society; he does an exceptionally good job of explaining this. How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
Matt is not only an efficient and conscientious co-worker, he cares a great deal about the environment that he shares with his colleagues, and is particularly sensitive to their well-being. He is a good, kind, patient person, and I am lucky to work with him.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
Matt is a great steward of public documents, and his institutional knowledge and technical savvy is very important to the mission of his unit, and ultimately to the state's public-at-large.What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
We recently had a party to welcome a new employee, and Matt was especially conscientious about making each person at that party feel welcome. Not only did he do a terrific job of providing a warm welcome for new employee, but he was also very thoughtful about our incorporating our entire department's food restrictions (diabetics, vegans, weight-watchers and junk-food enthusiasts)into his plan.Thomas Knowlton (1 of 2)
Student Learning Center
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
Thomas works as a Reference Assistant at the Student Learning Center. His primary responsibilities include assisting patrons at the Reference Desk, providing instruction in the use of library print collections and computer systems, troubleshooting and solving software problems at computer terminals, maintaining departmental statistics, and providing support to Reference Librarians and Student Assistants. How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
Thomas started as a Library Associate I in Reference in August, 2003.How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Thomas is a pleasant person whose positive attitude and professional approach inspire others around him to do their best. He works tirelessly to support his coworkers and meet his supervisors' objectives. He is punctual and takes his responsibilities seriously. His love of knowledge and earnest desire to assist others make him an invaluable presence at the Reference Desk.Thomas's outstanding commitment to the library is evident in another way. He developed the idea to provide UGA and the Athens community with a free film series every semester. He combined his interests and the library's resources to create a truly remarkable event others can enjoy. He spends countless hours researching films, investigating the quality and authenticity of newly released DVD's, and preparing thoughtful comments to enhance viewers' understanding of each selection. After every screening, he leads an insightful discussion that never fails to provide deeper meaning.
How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
We would lack the services of a motivated, intelligent, and caring individual who has made the library a better place for both employees and patrons. It would be nearly impossible to replace Thomas with someone as gifted, gracious, and generous.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
As a Reference Assistant, Thomas must provide excellent public service and assist others in accessing the vast spectrum of library knowledge and information. In fact, Thomas exceeds what is expected of him by always going to any length to ensure that needs are met completely. He has an impeccable sense of responsibility, which allows him to succeed daily at giving others the very best library experience. His impressive erudition, his creative contributions, and his general kindness make Reference a richer department. What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
As both a full-time employee and a full-time graduate student, Thomas has an overflowing plate to deal with. Nonetheless, he never complains and always seems to radiate happiness and a boundless energy for new challenges.Thomas Knowlton (2 of 2)
Student Learning Center
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
Thomas is a Library Associate I. His primary duties are to make the schedule for the SLC Reference Desk, provide assistance at that desk, maintain the SLC Reference Print Collection by receiving new books and transferring older titles to another location and to occasionally teach library instruction classes. He also assisted in the selection of materials for the SLC's Reading Room, under the guidance of Sheila Devaney. He is an "unsung hero" for his work on the Foreign Films Series. Through his own initiatinve, Thomas conceived of the plan to show foreign films which might not otherwise be available to audiences in Athens. Thomas thoroughly researches the films which he selects, makes critical selections from the many films which are available in a given genre, arranges for their purchase or loan, arranges for the films to be shown, takes full responsibility for all publicity and room reservations and then stays late on "film nights" to supervise the screening and to lead an informed discussion on the film. His film series is adverstised on WUGA, among other places, and this increases the visibility of the Libraries to the wider Athens area. He has shown French, Russian, Hungarian, and Czech film series, among others. As a result of his work, he has been asked to be a "guest speaker" in more than one class and is gaining something of a reputation as the "go to" man on foreign films. How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
Thomas began with the SLC and the Libraries in the Summer of 2003.How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Thomas' efforts have made the Libraries more visible to a wider audience. Some of the audience members at Thomas' screenings are from the general public, and not just University affiliates. This increased exposure is always good for the Libraries! How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
Without the Film Series, the Libraries, the University Community and the wider Athens area would be poorer. The Film Series introduces viewers to a wider genre of film than is normally available and promotes discussion and intellectual curiosity.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
In addition to doing an excellent job at his regular duties (scheduling for over eight people is not an easy task and requires close attention to detail. TK is great at this!), the Film Series ties in directly with the Libraries' Mission Statement of "The University of Georgia Libraries provide collections and services in support of the instruction, research, and service missions of the University of Georgia." and "The Libraries develop, manage, and store collections in an expanding variety of formats; provide access to knowledge and information in those collections using appropriate storage, access, and communications technologies." Thomas's innovative work in Film more than addresses this Mission Statement. What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
He's very technologically adept, fun to work with, and likes bands that are best described as alternative. He's also very good at his "regular" job and I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about him!Rachel Parnell
Serials
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
Serials Binding Unit Head -- Rachel is in charge of the Binding Operations for both the Main and Science Libraries. She oversees the preparation of materials to be bound and the shipping of the material to and from the commercial bindery. To do this, she supervises several assistants, including one full-time staff member, and she moves back and forth from the Main and Science Libraries. How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
Since February 2004.How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Although I am technically the Head of Rachel's Section (Serials Public Service/Binding), Rachel is really the force behind the Binding Unit's work. She not only accomplishes binding-related work with a high-level of proficiency, she coordinates the work of the unit so well that the unit staff is able to tackle other tasks outside of the normal routine. This includes retrospective corrections of item records for materials prepared in past years (a major project involving thousands of records). She also serves in the Public Services Unit by assisting patrons and by helping with both routine maintenance and special projects. Her manner of handling her work, offering support for other areas, and coordinating a variety of work activities has broad impact on the Libraries. Besides the tremendous binding work, she has been instrumental in freeing her supervisor and coworkers from most binding concerns, enabling us to focus on such things as microfilm repair, shifts of the collections, and patron-related service improvements in the Current Periodicals and the Microforms Areas. Yet she does all of this will very little fuss, no complaints, and always with an eye toward anything she can do to help. Although her kind of support looks easy, I know it is not; it requires of her a great deal of energy, vigilance, and careful thinking. Anything positive that comes of my own work is directly attributable to her and her support for our mission. So, as a result of Rachel, patrons can find materials more easily, our staff can answer questions more effectively, our area is cleaner and better maintained, microform materials that are damaged are more easily and more promptly repaired or replaced, and major projects involving complex issues can be more thoughtfully engaged. How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
Without Rachel: 1. Binding operations would not be so smooth, so accurate, or so flexible. 2. Old inherited problems with bound items would continue to persist from "generation to generation." 3. Patrons would find it more difficult to obtain materials. 4. Patrons would have fewer needed microfilm available to them 5. Staff would have fewer resources to answer patron questions pertaining to Current Periodicals and Microforms. 6. Patrons would encounter a messier environment, less conducive to their research and studies.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
See above. All of what I have mentioned are aspects of accomplishing our mission. The devil is in the details, certainly, yet it is in the details that the angels may triumph! What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
Rachel does not passively wait for assignments and tasks. She actively strives to understand what is needed and how she can provide for that need. She is VERY independent, yet not at all bashful about asking for advice or assistance when she needs it. She is also not bashful about making positive suggestions. Furthermore, she is ever-ready to accept new assignments and challenges. She makes me feel like she works WITH me, not for me. She's really a supervisor's dream come true and she inspires me to work harder and smarter. So, although she shines on her own and does not seek recognition, I believe she is deserving of at least a moment in the limelight.Mike Parrish

It is very rare to have Tech support staff who are as personable as Mike. Even if we have made some kind of stupid mistake or have a question that he has probably heard dozens of times throughout the day, he is never curt or condescending. I can't imagine how much more dull the interaction with Tech Support would be without him.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?

Cataloging
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
Jasmine's unit consisting of two fulltime people (herself and another staff person) plus 3 student workers are responsible for labelling and routing over 37,000 items: books, CDs, DVDs, anything which is newly cataloged. A lot of work for 2 people and 3 students. How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
5 years. How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Jasmine is professional, efficient, polite, and amazing at keeping track of all of that STUFF that flows through Marking. Jasmine can be counted on to pitch in to make sure the material is routed promptly with minimal delay. It is amazing how many materials go through Marking on a daily basis, especially during Fall semester!Books and other materials all come into Marking, are labeled, properly organized, and sent on their way with expediency and efficiency with a high attention to quality control.
Additionally, Jasmine is always willing to go out of her way to help find a book 'in the queue' that a patron or staff may need. Being that she is often the 'first stop' in Cataloging, Jasmine fields a variety of questions with ease, experience, and kindness. Her positive attitude, helpfulness, and dedication to efficiency is definitely a benefit to the Libraries.
Her work is very important to both the Cataloging and the Acquisitions Departments, and Jasmine is ensures that the complexities of routing are as painless as possible with good signage as well as being available for questions.
How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
The Marking Unit is a crucial and very un-sung Unit of the Libraries. Without the Marking Unit, labelling and routing books would not happen as effortlessly as it does currently. Jasmine just makes it all look so easy. Almost 37,000 things pass through the hands of just 5 people -- that is amazing!!! To pull off that kind of effort while maintaining a cheerful and professional demeanor is impressive.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
Jasmine provides the final link between the processing areas of the Libraries (Acquisitions and Cataloging) to the public services areas. She is providing quicker access by constantly evaluating and maintaining the most time efficient workflow possible in the Unit. What would happen if Marking was not so efficient or quality control conscious? Mis-marked materials or backlogs waiting for months and months to be marked would make finding anything in a library impossible. What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
Marking is certainly behind the scenes and it's something that can easily be taken for granted. Yet, it has a direct impact on people being able to find a book or serial on the shelf.Jasmine is a perfect example of an unsung heroine. She's working in an area of the Libraries which is behind the scenes, doing a very important job that is very easy to overlook. Yet, she does it wonderfully, keeping the materials flowing along as quickly as possible while maintaining a helpful and positive attitude.

Access Services
What is the nominee's position and what is the nature of his/her job?
David holds the positon of Reserves Coordinator at the Main Library. He is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of reserve requests, maintaining the integrity of the reserves collection, and providing efficient and effective service to reserves patrons. His position entails a great deal of contact with University faculty. Dave also supervises the work of six LAIIs.How long has the employee been employed at the UGA Libraries?
Dave began working for the Libraries as a student shelver more than five years ago. He then worked for two years as a LAII in Shelving. Based in no small part on his outstanding work record there and his enrollment in the Florida State University MLIS program, Dave was promoted to the position of Library Associate II (Reserves Coordinator) in August 2005.How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
Dave leads by example. I don't think I've ever seen Dave not working on some reserves project. He constantly strives to improve both the reserves process and the efficiency of the employees he supervises. I have heard the departmental administration state that the Reserves team had the fastest processing time ever on this Spring Semester's reserves lists. Dave's hard work inspired his employees to work both quickly and accurately. How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
Without the pride Dave takes in his job, the work environment in Reserves would not live up to the high standards to which any department in the Libraries should aim. Reserves lists would not be as accurate. Reserves lists would not be ready quickly. Learning would suffer around the University. More than all this, however, without Dave the work environment around the Libraries would suffer due to a lack of concern for patron needs.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
Quite simply, Dave's job is to guarantee that instructional materials are available to all those who need them when they need them. If performing that job is not integral to the Libraries' mission, then I do not know what is.strong>What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?
Dave never seeks credit for the good work he does. I often tell him that, since he will finish his MLIS program this December, he needs to look for plaudits to include on his resume. That, however, is not Dave's approach to his work or life. He only wants to get the job done. The only credit I've ever seen around Reserves is that which Dave gives to the LAIIs.Deborah Stanley

Unknown--five or six years, at least? How has the nominee's hard work affected your unit and/or department, as well as the Libraries?
It is Deborah's recent work leading the Libraries' Web Advisory Group (WAG) for which I wish to make this nomination. I believe this category is more appropriate than the "Extra Mile Above/Beyond" category because chairing WAG is currently one of her directly work-related, "other duties as assigned," not a project for which she simply volunteered in order to earn Brownie Points.Deborah's steady hand on WAG since she took over last year has improved the design and usability of the Libraries' Website, and I am much more inclined to use it now than I had been previously. I find I am making use of more--and better--internal resources since she has assumed this position.
How would the work environment at the UGA Libraries be different without the nominee?
The form and content of the Libraries' Website are extremely complex, politically sensitive, and important both as the Libraries' "electronic face" and as a front-line tool for our users. Someone with less solid judgment than Deborah's could easily take it in undesirable directions or (perhaps worse) cause it to stagnate because of the inability to resolve differences among competing interests. Her thoroughness and discretion are reflected in the WAG minutes, which reflect actions and decisions taken by the group under her direction, and while it's conceivable that someone else could perhaps do as good a job, I wouldn't really care to try to find out.Despite lack of recognition, what makes the nominee an integral part of the UGA Libraries' mission?
Her professionalism, intelligence, good judgment and pleasant demeanor toward her colleagues make her someone with whom it is easy to choose to work, or with whom it is a pleasure to accept collegial assignments.strong>What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?

Lisa is such an essential and vital presence in our department, and in the Library as a whole, that it's hard to imagine it without her. Her years of experience make her knowledgable about so many aspects of our work, and their history and evolution, that she is at this point a bona fide Serials expert. Even beyond her hard work on Serials-specific tasks, it's her personality and presence that really makes her an asset to the Libraries. Wherever she goes, she instantly brings grace, kindness and warmth to a room. She is genuinely interested in everyone she encounters and never fails to ask how you're doing and then really listen as you give your answer. She makes the difference between a work environment where people simply and ajacently perform simultaneous tasks and one where people can also remember they're people while doing so. Amy is a great teacher, bringing a real understanding of students and how they learn, to everything she does. She also makes learning fun and engaging. Amy has taken on a heavy teaching load, especially in teaching undergraduates, and she also coordinates the BI program and overseas the instruction lab. When people call to schedule instruction, she can always be relied upon to be helpful, enthusiastic and encouraging. One aspect of Amy's work that I think does not receive enough recognition is just how hard she works on the web site. She contributes many excellent ideas, is a great critical thinker and problem solver, and fixes all sorts of problems that most people never even know about. She helps to improve the quality of what is put out on our web site every day, editing, negotiating and picking up slack. Sometimes it really is like herding cats, but Amy works tirelessly to wrangle them! It's clear through her work that Amy is really dedicated to the Libraries having the best possible web presence, and she works hard to achieve that.
Amy has also taken the lead, with Robin Fay, in developing the library blog. She was instrumental in policy decisions and training, and wrote the contributors' instructions. She also worked as part of the team to implement the new version of the EJL, for which she redesigned the screens, taking a lot of input and technical information and creating a product that is going to serve a very important role for many of our users.
