"Other Duties As Assigned" Nominees

Awarded to the person asked to perform the most outlandish, less than appealing, or simply unusual task for the benefit of the UGA Libraries and not already included in the nominee's job description.

Amy Petit
Administration

Please describe the specific situation in when an employee was asked to complete an unusual task.

Amy has taken on a wide assortment of duties for Development. As you may have noticed, most of the time she is attached to head phones, which is at least a tape a day of dictation - from letters, projects, research, sleuthing. And she never complains!

What was the nominee asked to do that fell outside of his/her job description?

Amy has a wonderful ability to take very sketchy information and create fabulous, tug at your heart letters to donors. It has been such a huge help to our efforts! Spending hours every day listening to my digressions and turning that into an amazing number of letters and proposals is certainly not something anyone would sign up for!

How did the nominee overcome/complete the task?

Amy's attitude and willingness to take this on daily (it used to be divided by 3 people) - makes her one of our most valuable players! She has certainly stepped up on a variety of projects that were no fun - but they had an ending. The fact that this never goes away and is absolutely no fun -- should earn her an above and beyond recognition!

Jonathan Purcell
Access Services - Library Security

Please describe the specific situation in when an employee was asked to complete an unusual task.

There's been a number of times when Security needed someone to work crazy hours. Usually it was to let in maintenance workers (painters, electricians, etc.) that were part of the 2nd Floor restoration, or when the Map Room was being relocated from the Science Library out to the new Thomas Textiles location. Over the winter holidays each year, Eric Matthews or Claire Colombo comes back to the Library just to check on things and to flush all the toilets, but neither of them were available this year, so Security "volunteered" to handle it.

What was the nominee asked to do that fell outside of his/her job description?

Although shifts in the late evenings, weekends, and academic/holiday breaks are expected of everyone that works for Security, those types of shifts are still during the Libraries' predetermined/scheduled hours of operation. However, both the 2nd Floor restoration and the map room relocation worked 24 hours a day, meaning so did Library Security. Eric/Claire usually check the building over the holidays because it's a lot to ask of a part-time or student worker like Jon.

How did the nominee overcome/complete the task?

Jon basically either stayed in the building after closing time, or returned later in the day after getting some sleep. He usually stayed awake by playing Spades online via his laptap's wireless ethernet card.

(Optional) How bad was the situation/task?

It was bad enough that Jon stayed in the map room for 13 hours straight (11pm until Noon the following day), but he had to do it completely in the dark since there was no electricity in the building at the time. The wireless internet network was also severed during the relocation, so he didn't have his online Spades game to keep him entertained.

What else do you think the ASSET Awards Committee should know about your nominee?

Jon personifed "Other Duties as Assigned" while serving as the Weekday Main Library Opener for Security, and he continued to do so when he was promoted to his current Assistant Coordinator position. Whenever someone needs to work at bizaare hours or be present for unforeseen reasons, Jon is the first person we even ask.
