Awarded to an outstanding Libraries' Faculty member for continued exemplary service to the mission of the Libraries. The recipient will have exhibited exceptional job performance, attitude, and interpersonal working relationships within the libraries and/or the University community. Nominations are accepted from all employees, however, recipients are ultimately selected by Bill Potter, University Librarian.
From before ground was broken on the Student Learning Center, Carla Buss has
been brain, hands, back, feet and heart of the efforts to choose the furniture,
stretch staffing to cover new service areas, consider security needs, plan logistics
of the move, market the facilities, and develop new public service programs.
In assisting administration, chairing committees, or coordinating efforts of
many committees, she has perservered under numerous and conflicting demands,
all the while maintaining her regular duties in the Main Reference department,
assigning library instruction sessions as Bibliographic Instruction coordinator
and taking regular day, night, and weekend hours at the reference desk. In the
past fiscal year Carla has taught the most BI sessions of any librarian in Main
Reference. At the reference desk she develops and nurtures relationships with
individual students; at the end of a semester many students come back to the
desk to thank her for her help during their years at UGA. She contributes to
the Libraries by serving as Promotions Committee chair and member of FAB, and
is the coordinator and cheery needler of the reluctant for Red Cross blood drives.
In the relatively few years Carla has been at the Libraries the organization
has come to rely on her candor, expertise, and humor. She makes many tasks possible
and all of them more bearable.
Anna has continued to provide exemplary service to the Libraries' patrons while participating in numerous professional and service activities. Though she has done far more than I could include on this form, a few highlights of her service are outlined here.
This past semester, Anna collaborated with faculty to deliver a 3-credit course: UNIV 1109 - Resources for Research. She and her colleague used WebCT to deliver online instruction combined with twice-weekly in-person lectures. The amount of work that went into this project alone is impressive, but though she co-taught twice a week and had to prepare for classes, she continued to do one-time bibliographic instruction sessions to help out with the particularly heavy request load we had this year.
Anna also puts a lot of energy into working with colleagues across the Libraries' departments. She has served as president of LSA and is currently co-chair of the ASSET Awards committee. She is an active participant in professional committees, as well, and represents the UGA Libraries in ACRL's Instruction Section. She has continued her professional development by attending ALAs annual and mid-winter conferences and participated in ACRLs Institute for Information Literacy Immersion program. Anna continues to share the information she garnered there with other staff members.
Her service extends beyond the library community. This year, she participated as an application reader for the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, a group dedicated to awarding scholarships annually to women thirty-five years of age and older who through undergraduate or vocational education are seeking to better themselves, their families, and their communities.
Anna's enthusiasm for instruction and reference service, her dedication to her work, and commitment to faculty and student outreach has provided a positive influence and inspiring example to her peers and to our patrons.
