Athens Area Repositories

Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation has a small resource library. More of their materials materials are available at the Heritage Room, Athens Clarke Public Library.

Clarke County Courthouse

  • Superior Court posesses Clarke County deeds.
  • The Probate Court Office has records available through their office as well as many others, such as tax digests, in the Records Room in the basement. A finding aid to the Probate Court records is available at the Heritage Room, the Hargrett Library, the Probate Court office, the Records Room, and also the Georgia Archives.

Family History Center has records of genealogical interest that have been microfilmed by the Mormon Church.

The Heritage Room of the Athens Clarke County Library is a research collection for genealogy, local history and Georgia history open to all ages. In addition to the special emphasis given to collecting materials on African American history and the War Between the States, materials from Virginia, North and South Carolina are collected because of this area's place as a major path for early migration. Materials from and about local families, events and people are sought.

The University of Georgia Libraries

  • Brown Media Archives is the third largest broadcasting archives in the country. Its collections include 5 million feet of newsfilm, 50,000 television programs, and 39,500 radio programs as well as folk music field recordings and home movies from across Georgia.

  • Data Services assists University of Georgia students, faculty, and staff who require numeric data for quantitative research in the social sciences.

  • Digital Library of Georgia is a gateway to Georgia's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, audio, video, and other materials.

  • Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library consists of four sections: University Archives, The Georgiana Collection, Rare Books and Manuscripts. The Hargrett Library's holdings reflect and support research activities in collections specific to Georgia History. In addition to these interests the Hargrett Library has substantial holdings in the performing arts, literature and natural history.

  • Map Collection offers a detailed collection of current maps for all geographical areas; large collections of Georgia related cartographic material produced during the last 100 years including Sanborn maps and 220,000 air photos; and collections of atlases, digital data, and cartographic reference materials.

  • Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies is the premiere repository for modern political collections in the South. The Library has over 100 research collections that include politicians, political appointees, observers, and parties, as well as public policy groups.

  • U.S. Government Documents Collection located on the second floor of the Main Library and in the Science Library consists of U.S. Government publications issued by departments and agencies of the Federal Government.
